John Smith

General Manager

Rolex Bond Street

1 Bond Street

London

W1S 1SP

25th April 2021

Dear John,

What sets me apart from the other candidates for the open position at Rolex Bond Street, is my 4+ year combination of sales experience and luxury customer service which I gained at Primark and Hilton Park Lane. I make an impression. At Hilton, I was the preferred contact point for 4 Presidential Suite regulars.

You need somebody that knows how sales work, and how to deal with high-ticket clients. I have both in droves. Even at Primark, I was the highest performing Sales Assistant in upselling, being commended on this 6 times by the General Manager, and picked as the employee of the month 9 times over 3 years. During my time as a Concierge at Hilton, I gained invaluable experience of dealing with high ticket clients, managing and booking over 50 reservations a day, including large groups for longer stays which could total over £125,000. During this time, I maintained 100% customer satisfaction in post-stay surveys, and even collected 11 letters of commendation from satisfied customers about how I made their stay better or solved their problem. I was also the most effective at convincing customers to upgrade their stay options, and been commended on this 2 times by the Hilton Park Lane manager.

I believe my 3+ years of sales experience combined with 1 year of luxury customer service experience at Hilton will translate into me being an effective and memorable Rolex showroom employee. I know how important maintaining long-term customer relations is to you, and I am committed to gaining and retaining new regulars as soon as I start. At Hilton, I was known and liked amongst our Presidential Suite regulars, a fact my previous manager can attest to. I am ready to put those skills to use at Rolex if given the chance.

When could you find some time for me to tell you how I managed to resolve a triple-booking crisis with Hilton’s Presidential Suite in a way that made everyone happy?

Best Regards,

Elise Law

That’s an impressive cover letter ending. Now, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make your cover letter end with a bang:

1. Justify a promise of improvement with enthusiasm

Forget “Thank you for your time” and “Thanks for reading.” You are going to make a Justified Promise of Improvement with Enthusiasm. This is the model to write convincing cover letter ending paragraphs, where the deal is sealed. It’s almost like a sales script:

  1. Justify and show them the reason they should hire you.
  2. Promise what can you do for them. Answer: What is their biggest problem that you can solve? What is the most important criteria that you have to meet for them to want you?
  3. Suggest an improvement. What criteria, metric can you perform in? Have you got a statistic that shows you have done it before?
  4. Show enthusiasm. Employers would rather employ someone excited to join, than a better candidate that acts like they’re above it all.

Here are some examples of ending a cover letter with this formula.

How to conclude a cover letter: examples

Having not only this wealth of experience, but also perfect command of Spanish and Portuguese,I am ready to drive your sales in the Latin American markets and help you reach your goal of 10% market share in Brazil and Argentina. I have already done so for my last employer in Uruguay, Peru, and Chile, building a supply chain from scratch and reaching 15% market share in 2 years. I have been waiting for an opportunity to do it on a larger scale, and all you need to do is say the word.

This example shows confidence, ambition and drive, without needless bragging, empty statements or being needy.

With my 4+ years of experience in providing mental health support, and the proven track record in teaching students the benefits of meditation, I am equipped to help the students at St. John’s find calm and peace in an inner-city school, which will translate to a reduction in disruptions, better grades, and I believe will help you finally reach the ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted rating. In my previous position, I managed to reach over 2250 students with these techniques, reducing classroom disruptions by 57%, and improving GCSE pass grades from 58% to 70%. I am ready to do the same for students at St. John’s.

This example shows that you can handle the problems head-on, because you have done so before.

Here, the order is more interweaved, and instead of stats, you rely on an employer reference. Confidence is projected, without being obnoxious, as is the need in a high-end sales job.

2. Use confident language for closing a cover letter

Choose compelling language when talking about your main selling point, like:

  • Proven expertise in…
  • Expert knowledge
  • Ability to make improvements in…
  • Spotless track record in…
  • Deep know-how
  • Prowess
  • Proficiency

When talking about yourself, opt for phrases that project confidence, such as:

  • I am ready to...
  • I know I can...
  • I will…
  • I am equipped to...
  • I am committed to…
  • I know… (when referring to their requirements

Check your paragraph again, and make sure you have at least a line’s worth for all elements: Justify, Promise, Improvement and Enthusiasm. Are there any words or sentences that seem to not fit any category? In the bin!

We aren’t done yet though. Here’s how to finish a cover letter and have someone grab the phone or start typing that interview invitation email right away.

3. Make an offer they can’t refuse

You have given them enough reasons to hire you. You were confident in showing you’re the right person and they should look no further. What’s the worst thing you could do now? Here are some examples:

  • “I look forward to hearing from you.” (Boring)
  • “I look forward to working with you.” (Cocky)
  • “I am available immediately.” (Needy)
  • “I can interview at your convenience.” (Needy)
  • “I would love to interview with you.” (Needy)

And so on. Instead, make them an offer. Here are 3 examples, that match our cover letter closing paragraph examples from above:

How to close a covering letter: examples

“When would be a good time for me to tell you how I sourced new suppliers who reduced our production costs by 17% in Peru and Chile without ever setting foot there?”

Once again, you’re adding value. In the first example, you’re giving them a cliffhanger to clearly a good story that shows you can handle business.

“When could we discuss the most pressing issues you have at St. John’s and how my expertise can remedy them and help your students reach their full potential?”

Here you display a genuine interest in problems and offer your help.

“When could you find some time for me to tell you how I managed to resolve a triple-booking crisis with Hilton’s Presidential Suite in a way that made everyone happy?”

All three of them ask for the interview, but do it in such a way and provide so much value that you almost don’t notice it. I would advise against “Can we schedule a call or a meeting to discuss (...)”—it’s a lot of words that are letting the recruiter think about it.

4. Sign Off Professionally

That’s all there is to know about how to end a cover letter. Now, just pick one of these cover letter sign off styles:

How to sign off a cover letter

  • Sincerely,
  • Respectfully,
  • Best Regards,
  • Kind Regards,

Don’t use anything else. I like “Respectfully” the most. In the case that someone is sensitive to confident writing, it will compensate that a little bit.
