How to begin writing your cleaner CV?

A well-written CV is vital to standing out in the competitive cleaning industry in the UK, especially in major cities like London or Manchester. The key is to effectively present your skills and experience, whether in residential and commercial cleaning or specialized roles in healthcare, education, hospitality, or industrial environments.

Begin by carefully reading the job description for the cleaning role you are applying for and identifying the specific abilities and qualifications the employer wants you to have. Collect all the essential information, focusing on your roles and responsibilities in previous cleaning jobs, both part-time and full-time.

For London-specific roles, it might be important to highlight any experience working in busy urban environments or high-profile settings. It would also be beneficial if you could prepare a list of professional references who can vouch for your work ethic and cleaning skills, ensuring you have their permission and up-to-date contact details.

1. Write a personal statement for your cleaner CV

The right way to start a CV? Write a personal statement. Your personal statement (also called a personal profile) is your whole job application in a nutshell: it introduces you as an employee, indicates what you have to offer, and describes what you intend to achieve for your new employer. It’s 3–4 sentences that really pack a punch when handled well.

Take a total of 50–150 words to answer the following questions:

  • What kind of cleaner are you? How many years of experience do you have?
  • What industries or environments have you been working in?
  • What’s your most impressive/relevant work-related achievement?
  • What skill or attribute are you particularly proud of? Back this up with an example.
  • What are you hoping to be able to achieve in this job? (For the employer, not yourself).

There are quite a few questions to address here, but you should be able to cover them all in 3–4 sentences and absolutely no more than 150 words; the fewer, the better.

Your application may be filtered by an Application Tracking System (ATS)—software that scans through and scores your cleaner CV according to how well it matches the job advert. So try to include keywords from the job advert wherever possible, and be sure to mention the name of the position and the company’s name.

Your personal statement goes first in your cleaner CV, but it’s best to write it last. It’ll be much easier once you have your cleaner job descriptions and skills section written and some practice in writing accomplishment statements under your belt (that's why it's also called a CV summary). So keep it in the back of your mind and come back to it later.

2. Add a work history section to your cleaner CV

The best cleaner CV format to use is a chronological format. So in your work history section start from your most recent job and work your way back from there. This is what most employers expect to see, and it also helps your cleaner CV be more easily processed by an ATS.

Make a subheading for each job description using this template:

[Job Title]

[Company Name, Location]

[Dates of Employment]

Now list up to six bullet points under each subheading. The key thing here is to quantify everything you possibly can. Give concrete examples and focus wherever possible on the benefits your actions brought to your employer or the client. Use accomplishment statements to help structure your bullet points.

If you’re writing a CV with no experience, then focus on any internships, placement work, or volunteer work you’ve done and put this section after your education section. If you’re struggling to come up with some experience, still studying, or just finished your studies, then consider a student CV instead.

Remember to detail specific achievements to appear more compelling and enhance your chances of securing a desired position in the cleaning industry.

3. Include an education section in your cleaner CV

Stick with reverse chronological order when listing your education in a CV for a cleaning job. When listing diplomas and university degrees, include the name of your degree, the years you attended (with an expected graduation date if you’re still studying), and the name of the institution and its location. Use this template:

When it comes to your high school education, I recommend that you list all of your A-levels by subject, the years during which you studied them, the name of the school, and its location. For GCSEs simply state how many you completed, the years over which you completed them, the name of the school, and its location.

Mention Mathematics and English when stating how many GCSEs you’ve completed. Employers will often want to see you have passes in Maths and English as a bare minimum.

If you lack work experience to include in your cleaner CV, you may want to add bullet points to highlight your achievements or areas of excellence while studying.

4. Showcase skills in your CV for a cleaning job

Different cleaning roles—whether in residential, commercial, healthcare, or hospitality settings—demand unique skill sets. Make a list of as many of your cleaner skills as you can. Think soft skills (such as multitasking) and hard skills (such as cleaning techniques). Add a sentence to each skill that shows exactly how you’ve demonstrated that skill at work. In other words, prove you have this skill using concrete examples. If you can’t do this for a certain skill, it drops off your list until you can.

Save this list—you’ll need it when responding to other job adverts and when writing your cleaner cover letter. Go back to the job advert to which you’re responding now and check what skills they require. Make sure you have at least these skills on your list.

Copy them across to your cleaning job CV skills section together with any others that are relevant to the job at hand. You want to end up with 5–10 skills in total, all supported by real-life examples. That’s all there is to it. You’re cleaner CV skills section is now sorted and you have a master list of skills for next time.

Once again, pay attention to the keywords used in the advert and mirror them in your cleaner CV wherever possible. For example, if you have ‘teamwork skills’ but the advert asks for a ‘team player’, then consider changing your wording to match. This will help you land on top of the pile after an ATS sorting stage.

5. Make good use of extra sections in your cleaner CV

Your cleaning CV is supposed to give an employer an idea of what you’re like as an employee. Your work history, skills, and education go a long way toward doing this, but they don’t show the whole picture. Include additional sections in your CV to paint a fuller picture of yourself as a worker.

Many jobs will require a DBS check, some will need you to have a valid driving licence. Working around construction sites? You’ll need a CSCS card. Group all these things together under a ‘qualifications’ or ‘certificates and licences’ section.

Do you speak any languages other than English? This is a real advantage in any line of work, and I think you should definitely mention it in your cleaner CV. You can also list hobbies, interests, awards—anything relevant to your work, even if indirectly.

6. Type up a cleaner cover letter to go with your CV

Whether the advert reads ‘send your CV and cover letter’ or not, it’s generally expected that you include a cover letter with your cleaner CV. The one and only exception is if they’ve specifically asked you not to (or made it impossible to do so in an online application).

The good news is that by preparing your work experience and skills sections, you’re already halfway there to have your cleaner cover letter ready to go. You just need to get started with the right layout and then include:

  • A properly set-out header
  • The right salutation
  • A strong, attention-grabbing opening
  • A main paragraph chock-full of your achievements
  • A neat closing and confident call to action
  • The right sign-off for you.

End up with between half a page and a page-long cover letter that’ll perfectly match your cleaner CV. If you're writing a cover letter with no experience, focus on transferable skills such as time management or effective communication.

7. Keeping things neat and tidy, additional things to keep in mind

Ensure your cleaning CV is as pleasant on the eye as a freshly spruced-up room. Here, I'm sharing some basic yet impactful CV layout rules:

  • Leave your personal details near the top of your CV where they’ll be clear and easy to find. Don't put your address on a CV. An email and telephone number will suffice.
  • Break your CV structure down into sections by using subheadings.
  • Use white space to make the structure even clearer and easier on the eye.
  • Choose an appropriate CV font. Pick the one that is professional and understated like Arial, Noto, Liberation, or Calibri. If you’re not sure, just stick to the default.
  • Check the advert to see in which file type you should save your CV. If they don’t mention any particular file type, always save as (or export to) PDF.
  • Have fewer than 10 years of experience? Then, keep to one A4 page for your CV. You can add an A4 page for every additional decade of experience, but it’s generally recommended that you don’t go over two pages in total.
  • Go for a simple CV template. Visual CVs are usually not ATS-friendly.

Proofread your cleaning CV and cover letter. Ask someone else to read and help you proofread both documents. Use any of the apps, web apps, or programmes out there that can help you with spelling and grammar. Each mistake is like ‘missing a spot’ in a big way. You wouldn’t leave a floor half-mopped.

One last thing: don't lie on your CV. An experienced recruiter will quickly see through it.
