That’s the storyboard for a video editing CV. Now here’s a scene list to write your own CV:
The showreel will expose your skills fully to the trained eye. But the first person who will probably be checking your video editing CV will be a recruiter, not an artist. So your video editor CV should show that you are dependable, hardworking, and consistent—as well as skilled and artistic. The personal statement is the trailer, a short, punchy piece that communicates a couple main points across.
To write a striking personal statement, answer the following questions in one sentence each:
Just like the trailer, it comes together much easier once the full film is ready, so leave it until last (and that's why it's also called a CV summary).

“A portfolio for a creative role stands out when it's visually appealing and well-organized, letting the work speak for itself without overwhelming the viewer. While creativity matters, clarity and specificity are crucial—highlight relevant projects that show a strong understanding of the brand, audience, and campaign goals. A well-structured CV that ties your creative work to measurable results is often more impactful than a purely artistic presentation”.
A strong CV summary will convince the recruiter you’re the perfect candidate. Save time and choose a ready-made personal statement written by career experts and adjust it to your needs in the LiveCareer CV builder.
If the personal statement is the trailer, the CV job description of your video editing CV is the compilation of best scenes. Focus on your achievements, major projects, and figures that show that you are a consistent, dependable editor that delivers under pressure.
Show a wide range of organisational, management and business skills. You don’t need to describe every single medium and project you did. Use the PAR (Problem-Action-Result) formula to help you out.
If you have several impressive projects, you could add ‘Key Projects’ under each position or go for a functional CV format (also called a skills-based format).
List 3 to 7 bullet points for your most relevant position, and rank them in order of significance under such a heading:
[Job Title]
[Company Name, Location]
[Dates of Employment]
For older positions, stick to 3 bullet points.

If you don’t have any glossy productions on your Vimeo yet, you could elaborate on your formal education and the projects you have done as part of it. Of course, there are many self-starters in the business that have done perfectly well without degrees.
After you have recognisable commercial experience, your education will matter less and less. Once you have a big enough portfolio, nobody will bat an eye at it. Record your degree in the following way:
[Degree Class][Degree Name](Year Graduated)
[University Name]
If you are a self-starter finding it hard to get commercial work, you could expand your knowledge and understanding with a Level 3 UAL Diploma in Creative Media Production. This will equip you for progressing to degree study or commercial work.
You might want to check how to write a school leaver CV, too. This is to ensure your application stands out by effectively highlighting your skills, achievements, and potential.

Listing all the software you routinely work with in your job description can make it very blocky and hard to read. Instead, pick the top five tools you use, and list them in a skills section. Everyone can see your showreel and what you can do, this is just telling them how you do it.
Treat the skills section as the credits of your masterpiece. Just a mention so that their Applicant Tracking System can find the keywords, and so that they know whether they will need to train you, or provide different tools.
Skills
More credits. The lower down you go, the lower the chance somebody will read these additional sections. Therefore, if you have won any awards or competitions, move that Awards section up, right under your work experience.
If you were mainly freelancing and have an absolute ton of completed projects, you could also make a separate ‘Notable Projects’ section.
The other additional sections such as languages, volunteering or even some minor certifications will be less consequential (unless the ad calls for something specific), and therefore can be moved down the page.

The video editor cover letter is sort of an extended trailer. It takes the best scenes, or the ones most relevant to your new employer, and gives a little more depth, and a few more arguments to go see the whole film.
The ideal cover letter is composed of:
Be creative in your showreel. Follow standard rules for CV formatting to make sure your video editing CV is easily readable and accessible.
If you don’t hear back after two weeks, give them a follow-up call.
